Billabong has a fine surf heritage being founded in Australia in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant. They started by designing and creating board shorts at their home and selling them to local surf shops.
Surfers soon became aware of the the quality and overall durability of of Billabong shorts thanks to their triple-stitching. Merchant understood that in order for Billabong to grow into a reputable surf brand they needed to advertise and get their name out into the wider surf community.
The approach they took was to sponsor contests, which increased the public’s awareness of Billabong’s products. As a result of this increased brand awareness the company expanded. By the 1980s, Billabong board shorts were ubiquitous within the Australian surf community.
These days both Billabong board shorts and wetsuits are held in high esteem across the globe, and Billabong count surfers such as Griffin Colapinto, Italo Ferreira and the late Andy Irons as some of their sponsored riders.
